Can You Guess the #1 Song of 1965??

1965 was certainly a momentous year for pop and rock music. So many classic songs were released by so many now-legendary artists. "Satisfaction" was released in '65, as well as "Downtown" by Petula Clark, "Help" from the Beatles, "All Day and All of the Night" by The Kinks and "My Girl" by the Temptations, just to name a few. With so many powerhouse songs, you may ask yourself: "Self, I wonder what the number one record of 1965 was?" Using the Billboard Hot 100 list for 1965, the number one record might surprise you. Can you guess what it was?

It was
WOOLY BULLY

Wooly Bully by Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs

Wooly Bully was named Billboard's "Number One Record of the Year" despite never reaching No. 1 on a weekly Hot 100. Written and recorded by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs, it sold three million copies and reached No. 2 on the American Hot 100 chart on June 5–12, 1965, kept off the top by The Beach Boys' "Help Me, Rhonda".

Lead singer "Sam the Sham" (Domingo Samudio) named the song after his cat, Wooly Bully. The countdown intro of the song is done in Spanish and English and according to Sam: "The count down part of the song was also not planned. I was just goofing around and counted off in Tex-Mex. It just blew everybody away, and actually, I wanted it taken off the record. We did three takes, all of them different, and they took the first take and released it."

I remember at Wilson school dances when this song was played, everyone hit the dance floor, it was such a fun, goofy and energetic song.

Here's the entire year-end Hot 100 list for 1965:
